Day 23: Surprise a Special Senior Citizen

Day 23 of our challenge reminds us to reach out to those who could use some love and company during the holiday season. Today, we’ll prompt you to do a small act of kindness for someone whose social network might not be as strong as it used to be.

As we age and begin to enter our golden years, many folks experience a sense of loneliness. These feelings can be especially difficult during the holidays. Today, surprise a special senior citizen to let them know that you’re thinking of them. Think of an elder in your life – a family member, a friend, a community member – who could use a little cheer. Brainstorm different ways you can brighten their day. Below are some suggestions to help get you started.

  • Plan an in-person visit. Find a time that’s convenient for them, and schedule a visit. Remember that a little company, a warm beverage, and a conversation can go a long way.

  • Send a note. In a letter, email, or holiday card, let them know that they’re important to you. Share what you’ve been up to, and ask how they’re doing. Include a photo or two if you can.

  • Share a favorite dish. Bring or send a dish or sweet that they love. Whether it’s store-bought or homemade, they’ll appreciate the thought behind your kind gesture.
Today’s assignment is all about how to make sure your special someone knows that they’re in your thoughts and that you appreciate them. Create new memories together if you see each other in person, or exchange stories from past memories.

That’s a wrap on Day 23! Come back tomorrow, where we’ll tackle your to-do list in a fun and festive way.
