Day 6: Plan a New Tradition

Welcome back to Day 6 of the 25 Days of Holiday Memories! For many of us, this weekend was all about food shopping and prep for Thanksgiving  – a celebration that tends to look very similar from year to year. Today, we’ll shake things up. It’s time to question some of our existing rituals, and look at how we can breathe new life into our holiday traditions.

“I enjoy traveling and creating childhood memories that my children will remember forever,” says Alex Channing of Alex & The Fam and our special co-host for today’s challenge. “I love creating new traditions with my little family. I’m always looking for new activities that we can look back on and find relatable to a specific holiday or time of the year.”

Rituals and traditions create some of our strongest and most meaningful memories. They are deeply ingrained into our family culture and even our personal identity. Take a moment to think about the things you do every year between now and the end of December. What do you love and look forward to? What no longer serves you? This is an opportunity to reevaluate and make changes, which brings us to today’s assignment – to plan a new tradition that you find meaningful.

To start, think about what you value the most during the holiday season. Is it time spent with loved ones? A quiet and relaxing activity? An opportunity to reflect and reminisce? An activity that delights your kids? Once you determine what’s most important to you, start brainstorming!

Here are a few ideas for new holiday traditions to get you started.

  • Winter Solstice: Gather with loved ones to watch the sun set or gather around a bonfire on the longest night of the year (December 21st).

  • Holiday Puzzle: Start a festive puzzle at the beginning of the holiday season. Give it a designated spot in your home and let loved ones work on it at their leisure.

  • Countdown Calendar: Countdown to a specific holiday or the end of the year together. Mark off the days each morning, incorporate small treats like a traditional advent calendar, or opt for a Kindness Calendar.

  • Scenic Hike or Walk: Spend time in nature or promenade down your favorite city street to see the shop window displays. Pick a specific route, and plan to return every year at this time.

  • Hidden Ornament or Decoration: Pick an ornament or decoration you own, or purchase a new one. Hide it somewhere in your home each night before bed. The family member who finds it the next morning gets bragging rights or a small prize.

  • Matching Pajamas: Go online and order matching holiday pjs for you and your family, significant other, or furbaby. The more outrageous, the better.
The best holiday traditions are the ones you look forward to. The goal here is to establish something you will want to do every year moving forward, but you can always readjust or tweak your new tradition.

And that’s a wrap! Join us tomorrow for Day 7 of our 25-day challenge where we’ll take a look at different ways we can remember and reflect.
